Winter Flounder

A couple of years ago I did an article for Tide magazine called, "The Early Flounder Run".

It was about a trend I had seen with flounder coming in the bays earlier than many people expected and while I remain confident for a variety of reasons there are flounder that enter early, a lot of the fish caught in February could be holdovers.

Right now there are good catches of flounder occurring in the Galveston Bay complex, particularly in West Bay, Sabine Lake and in Lake Calcasieu. It isn't as good as in fall but it has been consistent. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department believes warming Gulf and bay waters are causing less flounder to spawn. Could it be that fewer are actually leaving during the fall run?

If this is true, it underscores how important it is to let as many flounder that get the urge to leave out of the bays into the Gulf, doesn't it?

Oh and by the way, I've been doing my part in the battle against those pesky redfish that everyone is blaming for the ills of the bay. This one is from the Sabine Jetties.
