Special treat: flounder larva and other cool stuff!

Shane Bonnot of Sea Center Texas was kind enough to send in this pic of some of a flounder larva spawned recently at their facility. Tell me this isn't cool. We get a rare glimpse of a flounder before the eye migrates.

Switching gears to  some fishing stuff, have you ever heard of tipping jigs with strips of flounder belly meat? It seems to be a popular trick on the East Coast for summer flounder and it is something I actually tried a few times to some success.

Have any of you tried this? With the spring run coming up it might be something to add to your repertoire if you're like some anglers and don't like eating the belly meat on the flounder.

I was doing a bit of research getting ready to make my flounder only tackle box for 2009. Each year I experiment with all kinds of different stuff to bring my readers the latest information and tactics that can benefit them in the field. I just went to Flounder Pounder who I have to admit has been off my radar for awhile and found their "Sliding Walker" weights. This is what Phil Ortiz, Flounder Pounder Founder (say that five times in a row!) said about on their website.

"you just cant fish bottom structure without one of these amazing weights. It stands up at rest on the bottom, It slides on the line, and it walks up and over everything on the bottom. Fish it downstream and walk it into the current and its almost impossible to lose. If your fishing live bait you need this walking sinker in your tackle box, and on your line."

I think I'm gonna order some of those and give them a try this year. Any of you have luck with them? Oh, if you want more information, go here.

    Flounder Belly for Bait....

The 1st time I heard about using the strips of flounder belly for bait, I thought I was being teased.

This older guy landed a solid fish near one of my holes from the bank, and he kept saying "flounder belly, flounder belly!!"

My buddy and I looked at each other like no way.....sure enough he was tipping his touts with strips of flounder.

Occasionally I still try it when I am looking for the edge over my friends.....but generally I stick with gulp, if I want something that has smell.

I fish with artificials 90 percent of the time when seeking flatties, however, I do use live bait from time to time and will tip my jigs with shrimp. Flounder strips do work and I will probably do some video series on this later this spring. Thanks for the feedback my friend.

Cool photo. I've never seen a flounder in that stage before.

As for fishing flounder bellies, yes I have. It is not my go to bait every time I fish, but if bait is hard to come by I will surely use them. And they will catch flounder.
