Monday Flounder Update: Sabine anglers bring 33 fish to Roundup

Greetings fellow Flounder Fanatics!

With two cool fronts under our belts there is no question fall is in the air. This is OUR time of year when the temperatures a little cooler, the leaves are falling and the fall flounder run is in traction. The Flounder Revolution is making huge strides and there are major differences being made right now for future generations.

Sabine Flounder Roundup HUGE success

The Sabine Flounder Roundup held at Pleasure Island Sat. Oct. 17 was a huge success. Despite challenging conditions with high winds and murky water on the north end of Sabine Lake, anglers brought in a total of 33 fish. The coolest part was that eight of them were over 18 inches.

Angler Justin Hawkins won the replica fish for the tournament with a 19.50-incher which was one of six fish he brought in.

Hawkin's fish was not only big but beautiful. Look at those spots!

Most of the fish came from the ship channel on the south end of the ecosystem, where anglers reported decent action. The north end was tough but did produce a few fish.

I would personally like to thank the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for bringing out the hatchery truck and allowing us to collect fish especially David Abrego for giving the initial go ahead and Shane Bonnot for taking time away from his family to man the truck, take care of the fish and warmly greet anglers.

The Orange County Chapter of CCA led by Scott Bandy turned out in full force and Fortune Ford and Anna Bandy get special credit for sticking around all morning to log and photograph entries. Thanks also go out to Capt. Phillip Samuels, Jason Fregia, Gerald Burleigh, Kirk Blood, Jerry Mambretti and the people at Sharky's Grill who supported the event.

And last but definitely not least the anglers who fished the event. Without you this would not have been possible.

October still in play

Kaylin Barlow still leads October's replica contest with her fish that measures just over 20 inches. Anglers are starting to see some big fish out there and still have almost two weeks to compete for October's replica and earn "Flounder Angler of the Year" points.

The largest flounder measuring 20 inches or more caught, documented (as per our guidelines) and photographed can earn a fiberglass flounder replica from March-November through our program, which you can learn more about by clicking here. The angler with the most total inches of flounder registered at the end of November gets a special trophy and a $1,000 fishing tackle package.
