Monday Flounder Update: Favorite Lure Colors, State Record Flounder

Greetings fellow flounder fanatics!

I always look forward to a new year and I truly believe 2010 will be a revolutionary one for flounder fishing. As the conservation measures accomplished last year have taken effect, I have had a huge flash of inspiration and incite on flounder fishing technique which I eluded to in my Jan. 1 posting.

I am in the midst of documenting these ideas and working on putting them into some easy to access formats that will benefit everyone who enjoys catching flatfish as much as I do. I always work hard experimenting with unique strategies to catch flounder (and other fish) and have came up with some things I am very proud of in the past. What I am talking about now however, is at another level and involves more than just specific kinds of tackle.

Details coming fairly soon....

State Record Flounder

Got an interesting email from Russell Gil of Groves, TX regarding Herbert Endicott's 13-pound state record flounder.

"I thought you might like to hear a story about Mr. Endicott's state record flounder.  Bruce Thompson (the Bruce of Bruces Market Basket) bought the Endicott house after Mr. Endicott passed away.  We rented the house from him for a few years and then purchased it from Mr. Thompson and lived in it until my family outgrew it.  Our next door neighbor was a lady named Inez Landry.  Mrs. Landry had the mounted fish on her kitchen wall before giving it to her grandkids.  She no longer lives in her house and is in a nursing home."

"Mrs Landry told me that her husband was with Mr. Endicott when he caught the fish.  I don't know if you remember Ray Sasser, but at the time he was the outdoor writer for the PA News.  Sasser lived about three or four doors down from The Endicott and Landry's.  Mrs. Landry told me that Sasser came down to see what they had caught and nearly had a stroke because they had already cut the head off and were cleaning a flounder that was bigger than the record fish!  I'm assuming it was Sasser who then got them to certify the fish."

Favorite Flounder Lure Colors

In a recent posting I asked anglers to share their favorite lure colors for locations along the Gulf Coast. And as I expected the answers were varied. Here's what I got via blog comments and email.

Calcasieu: Glow, glow/chartreuse, pink
Sabine Lake: Glow, chartreuse/gold glitter, glow/chartreuse
Galveston: Pearl, chartreuse/fire, plum/chartreuse, pumpkinseed/chartreuse
Rockport/Aransas Bay Area: Hot pink, salt and pepper
Corpus Christi Bay: Pumpkinseed

If you are looking to fish some of these areas, these would be some great colors to start with. These recommendations did not come from a corporation or a guide, but the average anglers who fish these areas regularly.

I'll be checking back in the next week with more updates. Looking forward to the spring run which is just around the corner.
