Monday Flounder Update: The Revolution Grows!

Greetings fellow flounder fanatics!

The revolution is spreading with people all over contributing directly to flounder conservation by donating fish to Sea Center Texas to aid the upstart stocking program. Sea Center needs broodstock and they are getting it from Sabine Lake to West Galveston Bay.

From Bryan Treadway...

"We had a great turnout for the first Lutes Marine tournament of the season with 69 people entering. Twelve live flounder were turned in and all were in great condition. We also had three big belly trout as I knew they were breeding the trout now and I had the opportunity to get them in quickly. We raised over $260 for Sea Center. Even had some local press coverage. Momentum is gaining."

Scott Bandy of the Orange County CCA Chapter sent in some great news this weekend...

"Today (May 1) I caught five flounder to 18.5 inches long. I turned four of them over to Shane Bonnot at the Sea Center for the Sabine broodstock ( the other died due to swallowed the hook). Caught them on a popping cork with a 1/z jig head with a smoke Berkley Gulp swimming mullet was the lure of choice, worked along the cane with the tide. I turned in a 18.5", 17.750", 16.375", and a 15.625" flounder. Here are a few pictures of the flounder being turned over to the Sea Center."

April Replica Winner

Congratulations to angler Jantzen Miller who won the April replica tournament for catching and releasing a 26.5-inch 10-pound flounder. It is our largest fish yet and earned him an awesome replica of the catch from The Fish Mount Store. May is wide open so far and we hope to see your entries of 20-inch fish or better. Flounder Seminar in Dallas

I will be holding a coastal fishing seminar at the DU Sporting Expo Sat. May 29 at 1 p.m. A big focus of the seminar will be flounder. Other editors and contributors to Texas Fish & Game will also be on hand throughout the weekend. I will be at the Texas Fish & Game booth to talk outdoors and would love to meet all of you in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Tech Tip

In the continuing quest to help all of you upgrade your flounder fishing experience we will continue our weekly tech tips. This one is short but crucial.

I have written and spoken at great length about how bony the mouth of a flounder is and the need for heavy braided line and a stiff rod. Well, sharp hooks also figure into this equation. Keep a hook sharpener in your tackle box and sharpen all hooks on jigheads and leaders before every trip. And then on the trip, check the tip of your hook frequently and make sure it has an edge. It will make a big difference in the quest to turn hooksets into catches.
