Sabine Flounder Roundup Saturday

(Note: This excerpt is from my column in the Port Arthur News and Orange Leader. To read the rest of the story click here.)

This Saturday (Oct. 16) anglers will have an opportunity to contribute to Sabine Lake’s flounder future.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) will hold a Sabine Lake Flounder Roundup.

My Flounder Revolution program sponsored by the Coastal Conservation Association and Project: Zoo Quest will team up to provide a replica for the angler who brings in the largest live flounder to the donation site near Sharky’s Grill at 540 South Levee Road on Pleasure Island from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

These fish will be sent to Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson to be spawned and their offspring stocked back into Sabine Lake.

“It is important for us to get flounder for each bay system. There seems to be some genetic isolation of flounder, so we need to put Sabine flounder in Sabine Lake and Galveston’s fish in Galveston Bay and so on,” said TPWD’s Shane Bonnot.

Last year anglers contributed nearly 40 flounder to Sea Center and this year Bonnot hopes the take will be even greater.

“We hope we get a lot of fish and a really good showing at the Roundup. The anglers of the Sabine areas have been so good about helping us out and that has translated to Sabine Lake getting flounder stockings,” he said.

If you plan to fish the event e-mail me at cmoore@fishgame.com so we have an idea of how many people to expect.

Last year angler Justin Hawkins, pictured here releasing a big flounder, caught the biggest fish of the Roundup and earned a replica of his catch.

HUGE update coming Monday (Lots and lots of news items and other information on next weekend's Galveston Roundup, an angler who turned in three big flounder this week and some conservation news to name a few.)
